Chinese-Style Stir-Fried Chayote (Chinese Squash)
Ingredients:
- 2 medium-sized chayotes (Chinese squash)
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 small onion, sliced thinly
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced (optional for color)
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional, for deeper flavor)
- 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, for a hint of sweetness)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil (optional, for added fragrance)
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar (optional, for a little tang)
- Fresh cilantro or spring onions for garnish
Instructions:
- Prepare the Chayote:
- Peel the chayote and remove the pit inside. Cut the squash into thin slices or matchsticks, depending on your preference.
- You can blanch the chayote slices in boiling water for 1-2 minutes to slightly soften them, but it's optional.
- Stir-fry the Vegetables:
- Heat vegetable oil in a wok or large pan over medium-high heat.
- Add minced garlic and stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add the sliced onion (and bell pepper, if using) and cook for 2-3 minutes until softened.
- Add the Chayote:
- Add the sliced chayote to the pan. Stir well to combine with the garlic and onions. Stir-fry for about 5-6 minutes until the squash starts to soften but still retains some crispness.
- Season the Dish:
- Stir in soy sauce, oyster sauce (if using), and sugar. Adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper.
- If you'd like a little tang, add rice vinegar. Stir well and cook for another 2 minutes.
- Finish and Garnish:
- Drizzle sesame oil over the dish for a final touch of flavor.
- Garnish with freshly chopped cilantro or spring onions for color and a fresh taste.
- Serve:
- Serve hot as a side dish with steamed rice, noodles, or any Chinese-style main dish.
